On November 18, 2024, the Agricultural University of Plovdiv hosted a roundtable event within the framework of the Arcadia project, focused on water resource management in the Plovdiv region. The event was opened by Prof. Kristina Yancheva, the regional governor of Plovdiv, who emphasized the importance of eco-friendly solutions for sustainable water management in the context of climate change. Prof. Yancheva expressed her confidence in the support of the regional administration for the successful implementation of the project.

Prof. Vladislav Popov, the project coordinator from the Agricultural University of Plovdiv, presented the goals, key components, and expected outcomes of Arcadia. He introduced the eco-friendly climate adaptation solutions being applied in Europe, highlighting their significance in mitigating flood risks and promoting sustainable water management in the Plovdiv region.
A central topic of discussion was the implementation of eco-friendly solutions (EFS) for water management and their applicability in Bulgaria, along with financing and sustainable application strategies. Examples from practice were shared, demonstrating the effectiveness of these solutions in addressing climate change challenges. Representatives from the Basin Directorate “East-Belomorski Region” and the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters (RIOEW) in Plovdiv expressed their readiness to support the project with expertise and data related to water management and flood risks.
They also proposed inviting representatives from the Water Supply and Sewerage Company and Irrigation Systems Ltd. (Plovdiv branch) to participate in future stages of the project. The institutions informed attendees that they use electronic databases and models, which were also employed in the development of the Flood Risk Management Plan for the 2022-2027 period in the East-Belomorski region, which could benefit the project.

The business sector also actively participated, sharing initiatives to integrate eco-friendly solutions into water management practices. They extended an invitation to attend an upcoming roundtable titled “How Business Conserves Water Resources,” organized by the Trakia Economic Zone Cluster. In conclusion, participants expressed their support for the application of eco-friendly solutions for climate adaptation and water management. The Arcadia project was recognized as a significant step toward sustainable regional development and an effective approach to addressing the challenges of climate change and water resources. Stakeholders at the roundtable included representatives from academia, regional communities, NGOs, government bodies, and local initiatives.
