ARCADIA II General Assembly 2025

Strengthening collaboration for climate adaptation

On April 8 and 10, 2025, ARCADIA project partners will gather for the much-anticipated General Assembly, a key moment for collaboration and progress in our mission to advance Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate adaptation. These days of workshops, dedicated to project topics and actions, will take place in Zagreb, Croatia, to foster co-innovation, knowledge exchange, and strategic alignment.

  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • This workshop aims to identify common elements among the 17 Co-innovation Labs through a discussion on the methodology and the tools adopted in each Co-innovation Lab, the interactions among them, and their connection with the cross-cutting WPs.
  • Mandatory participants: at least 3 partners from each regional WP
    • 2 T7.1 contributors (At least one from CKIC)
    • 2 T7.2 contributors (At least one from VU)
    • 2 T8.2 contributors (At least one from GECOS)
    • 2 T9.1 contributors (At least one from SLU)
    • 2 T9.2 contributors (At least one from CMCC)
    • 2 people from each Fellow Region partner
15:45 – 16:45 | Workshop “Model and Fellow Regions’ twinning”
  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • Building on the insights gained from Workshop 1 on Co-Innovation Labs, this session will focus on identifying the most suitable twinning pairings between model and fellow regions. The workshop will build upon the clustering criteria discussed during the Twinning Kick-off Meeting and previous exchanges to ensure an effective and meaningful matching process. Through interactive exercises and discussions, participants will explore key themes, identify areas of mutual interest, and assess available capacities to foster meaningful peer exchanges. This process will help align the twinning approach with regional needs while promoting knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
  • Mandatory participants
    • At least 3 partners from each regional WP
    • At least 2 people from each Fellow Region partner
  • Highly welcomed participants
    • T7.1 contributors
    • T7.2 contributors
    • T8.2 contributors
    • T9.1 contributors
    • T9.2 contributors
17:00 – 18:00 | Workshop “Financial instruments”
  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • This workshop will lay the groundwork for Task 9.3 which addresses financial investment systems, natural capital accounting and innovation in green business models. Through an interactive session, a preliminary exploration of the needs of the partner regions will be carried out and existing resources, including partners’ financial expertise, will be identified.
  • Mandatory participants:
    • At least the regional coordinator partner (Model Region)
    • 1 person per co-innovation lab territory (cities, counties, etc.)
      • [1 speaker for each region]
    • T9.3 contributors  + CMCC
  • Welcome participants: any other partner

18:00 – 18:20 | Closing

April 9, 2025 – First Festival of transformative Nature-based Solution

The First Arcadia Festival on community-led adaptation in Croatia dedicated to empowering change-makers for climate resilience through Nature-based Solutions (NBS). By fostering the exchange of knowledge, tools, and best practices, the Festival – open to the public – aims to equip local and regional actors with the means to adapt to climate challenges and implement effective, sustainable solutions. This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration, innovation, and community engagement in building a climate-resilient future.

April 10, 2025

9:15 – 10:30 | Scientific publications from ARCADIA
  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • This workshop aims to identify specific research issues to be deepened for potential scientific publications contributing to the academic outcomes of the ARCADIA project. Participants from partner organisations will take part in discussion groups to gather ideas for potential scientific publication within the selected themes:
      • Governance and Policy
      • Data-driven approaches and analysis
      • NbS implementation
      • NbS regional adaptation pathways
    • Within each theme, specific sub-themes have been identified. Moreover, participants will have the possibility to suggest additional sub-themes of interest.
  • Mandatory participants: at least each WP Lead
  • Welcome participants: all partners interested in contributing to scientific publications
9:30 – 10:30 | How to engage with Climathons
  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • To introduce and explore the role of datathons and climathons as innovative tools for citizen engagement, co-design of Nature-based Solutions (NBS), and climate risk assessment.
    • To demonstrate how crowdsourcing and open data can enhance knowledge production, dataset validation, and solution performance assessments.
    • To foster collaboration among ARCADIA partners, public organizations, and citizens in addressing local and regional climate challenges.
    • To provide methodological guidance (from WP11) and practical insights (from WP1-5, 8, 10) for organizing datathons and climathons.
    • To identify actionable pathways for upscaling NbS and Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) networks through participatory approaches.
  • Mandatory participants:
    • ARCADIA Project Partners (WP1-5, 8, 10, 11 representatives)
    • Communication Board members
    • CKIC Representatives (Climathon methodology providers)
11:00 – 12:00 | Innovation in Arcadia
  • Objectives of the Workshop
    • This workshop aims to foster a discussion to value the innovative contributions that the ARCADIA project may bring to advancing NbS implementation and climate adaptation. Participants will explore how ARCADIA provides impact across various areas of innovation (technological, social, economic/financial, policy & governance etc.) as well as different stages of innovation where these contributions may be positioned. Additionally, they will discuss the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Societal Readiness Level (SRL) of the innovative tools and methods developed within the project.
  • Mandatory participants: at least one person from each partner

12:00 – 13:00 | Wrap up & To dos

14:30 – 16:30 | Site visit “Exploring NbS in Zagreb’s urban regeneration”

The afternoon session will include a site visit to the former meat-processing factory, Sljeme, in Sesvete, Zagreb. This site, a prominent brownfield, has played a pivotal role in urban regeneration within the ProGIreg project, serving as a pilot location for innovative NbS implementations. Several NbS elements have been introduced to revitalize the area and address urban pollution and environmental degradation, including:

  • A therapeutic garden
  • An aquaponics system
  • Green walls
  • Cycling and pedestrian paths

As part of the ARCADIA project, this site will serve as one of Zagreb’s co-innovation labs, set to launch in July 2025. The visit will offer partners a firsthand look at successful NbS applications and insights into scaling similar approaches across different regions.
