Environmental Justice

Environmental Justice Summer School at VU Amsterdam

Across the globe, the impacts of environmental change hit the most vulnerable hardest, uneven policies, silenced voices, and overlooked worldviews amplify these injustices. As scholars and activists rally around environmental justice, a new summer school at VU Amsterdam offers a timely deep dive into both theory and practice.

Organized by experts from our partner VU Amsterdam and supported by the FairNature project, the Environmental Justice in Theory and Practice course runs from 20 to 24 July 2026. This year’s edition spotlights nature-based solutions, making it especially relevant for those tackling adaptation challenges like ours in the Arcadia Project.

A dynamic programme for real-world impact

The one-week intensive covers key concepts, methods, and trends through lectures, guest speakers, and hands-on case studies. Expect discussions on:

  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation (SDG 13)
  • Marine and terrestrial conservation (SDGs 14 & 15)
  • Urban sustainability initiatives (SDG 11)

Practitioners will share how justice principles play out on the ground, sparking debates on theory versus practice. Students get ample space to apply these ideas to their own cases of environmental injustice or activism.
